Pokémon Cards, Gen Z, and the "Investment" Talk

Cards are outpacing the stock market right now. Here's our honest take on what that actually means for you.

There's been a lot of coverage lately — Slate ran a piece on it this week — about the Pokémon card market outpacing the S&P 500 and even Bitcoin over the past few months. It's real. Grading submissions hit a record high this spring, and a growing share of buyers are Gen Z, treating cards less like a hobby and more like a portfolio line item.

The numbers are real

Pricing data from Card Ladder puts Pokémon cards up over 3,000% across the last two decades, and recent short-term returns have genuinely beaten a lot of traditional assets. That kind of number gets attention, especially from a generation that's grown up watching crypto, sneakers, and now cardboard treated as legitimate alternative investments.

The part that worries us

Rising prices have brought rising counterfeit activity right along with them, and there have been genuine robberies targeting Pokémon cards reported across multiple states this year. When something gets treated purely as a speculative asset, corners get cut — on authentication, on where people buy from, on basic security.

We're not going to pretend we have some special insight into where the market goes from here — we're a card shop, not financial advisors, and nothing here should be taken as investment advice. What we do know is grading and cards.

Our honest take

Collect because you love the game. If the market keeps climbing, great — but a collection built on genuine interest survives a downturn a lot better than one built purely on a price chart. And however you're buying, buy from sources that authenticate what they sell. That's the one piece of this whole conversation that isn't really up for debate.

If you're newer to grading and want to understand what actually separates a real PSA 10 from a card that just looks mint, our Grading & Condition Guide walks through exactly what graders look for.
